Very early in the morning of November 20, 2018, I turned off my computer. Microsoft automatically downloaded a “critical update.” Two hours later when I tried to use the computer, I could not. I could not leave the startup page. I haven’t been on the computer since that morning. I am now using our local library’s computers and have not yet decided if I will try to have my computer repaired. However, it is time to start blogging again. Since I also can’t get into my old Microsoft accounts, I’m starting a new blog as of Saturday, May 4, 2019.

I created a “Wall of Shame” a few years ago for really horrendous Legislative votes and Governor’s actions. It is time for a “Hall of Honor” for actions above and beyond the call of duty. The first such “Hall of Honor” goes to the Mayor and Trustees of the Village of Morton, Illinois who prohibited marijuana businesses within the village limits the same day that the law went into force. The mayor proposed the ordinance and the Trustees passed the ordinance 6-0. The “Hall of Honor” not includes the El Paso Mayor and Council and 6 members of the Naperville City Council.

There was some questionable information about this vote in the article that I used. Two members of the Naperville City Council contacted me about it. I asked one of the two to send me the actual motion as voted upon. I received it Saturday when the library was closed. That motion stated:

“A motion in substitution [A motion replacing the previous motion. The previous motion was not voted upon and I am not providing it here.] was made by Councilman Coyne, seconded by Councilman Hinterlong, for Option 1: to pass the ordinance amending Title 3 of the Naperville Municipal Code by the addition of Chapter 17 prohibiting adult use cannabis business establishments other than medical cannabis cultivation centers and medical cannabis dispensing organizations and to direct staff to bring back a report within 60 days that advises Council concerning including an advisory (non-binding) referendum question on a future election ballot.”

Also from the council member who furnished the motion: “ … the three who voted against made it clear that they were only voting against because they wanted the motion to include more specific details regarding what specific [future election] ballot the referendum will be on:”

I apologize for the confusion. Newspaper articles generally don’t give the specific motion for a vote or the reasons why the members are voting for or against the specific motion.

I wasn’t at the library Monday and Tuesday because of the fake made-made global warming “crisis.” Some areas in Illinois had record snow and cold on Monday and Tuesday. Peoria had record cold Tuesday and a record low high temperature. Made-made global warming was a lie, is a lie, and will be a lie in the future. 


Do you believe this “climate change” was caused by man-made global warming? It occurred Before Christ i.e. 612 B.C.

Eastwood had finished second to freshman Beatrix Frissell at Montana’s first two races this fall. On Friday they did what they’ve been doing all season [Third race this year.] -- running mostly side by side -- but this time Eastwood got to the tape first, by a mere tenth of a second.
 
She [He] and Frissell both had times of 17:55.
 
‘Coach talks about having synergy as a team, and I think that’s the case with me and Bea. We work really well together,’ said Eastwood. ‘We went in wanting to work together. We moved through the course really well and put a good race effort in.’

Today’s post deals with the consequences for some businesses of one of those numerous tax hikes.

ROCK ISLAND — A few days ago, I pulled into Walt’s Service Station in Rock Island, and, as the manager filled my gas tank, I asked, ‘How’s business [Ouch.]?’

Joe Schaecher glanced across the street at a competitor’s station and said, ‘I’m not losing business to that guy. But I sure am to Iowa [The business is located near the Illinoi/Iowa border.] since the governor raised the gas tax [The governor signed the bill. The General Assembly passed the tax hike. Here is an easy lesson in supply and demand. When someone in the vicinity of a business is selling the same or similar product at a significantly lower price, consumers will tend to buy from the other business.].’

Walt’s is a mom and pop enterprise that has been owned by the same family since 1962. It’s the sort of place where gas jockeys still fill customer’s tanks and where you can schedule an oil change or brake job.

But like many gas stations, it is feeling the pinch since Illinois lawmakers raised the tax on gasoline by 19 cents a gallon beginning July 1.

‘I’d guess the amount of gas we are selling is down 15 to 20 percent since they raised the tax [A significant decrease in business.]. I really can’t blame folks for going over to Iowa to save. My distributors tell me when you pull into Iowa stations, all you see are Illinois plates [Ouch, Ouch, Ouch.],’ Schaecher said.

The story is much the same for border communities across Illinois [These States border on some portion of Illinois: Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana.], said Josh Sharp, executive vice president of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association.

‘What we are hearing consistently from members in border communities is that business is down by 15 to 25 percent. The industry has been hit by a triple whammy this year. First the gas tax was doubled, then the cigarette tax increased [by $1] and finally the minimum wage was increased [The minimum wage increase increased the cost of doing business. The two increases in taxes decreased the amount of revenue received from the sale of cigarettes and gasoline.]. I just got off the phone with a member in Quincy who doesn’t know if he will be able to stay in business [Possible result for other businesses as well. If a company can’t turn a profit including profit for the owner as a return on his investment and his time devoted to the business, it will not stay in business.].’

The Illinois motor fuel tax rose from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon. This brings state fees and taxes to about 54.98 cents per gallon. This does not include federal, municipal or county taxes on gasoline.

State government is raking in an additional $100 million more per month in fuel taxes.

Illinois now ranks third in the nation for its tax on gasoline [Third highest.], according to data compiled by the American Petroleum Institute.

By comparison, Iowa ranks 25th, with its total state tax on gasoline being 24.5 cents less per gallon. The differential is more pronounced in the Metro East portion of the state. Missouri ranks 49th and taxes gasoline at 37.5 cents less per gallon than the Land of Lincoln [Illinois]. Taxes are 29 cents per gallon less in Kentucky, 8 cents less in Indiana and 22 cents less in Wisconsin.

‘Look at a town like Edwardsville. It’s basically a suburb of St. Louis. People live there and work and shop in Missouri. It’s no problem for them to just fill up across the river, too [And they do. When I traveled by motor vehicle from Arizona and Texas to and from Illinois, I always made a point of filling up in Missouri before driving into Illinois and not purchasing gas, other than the initial fill up, in Illinois until I reached Missouri. It is simple economics. Missouri gas has been less expenses than Illinois gas since I’ve be driving to and from both southern States.],’ Sharp said. “That hurts the economy in Illinois [Of course it does.].’

Illinois has been financially mismanaged for so many decades [So very true.] that there is a deep suspicion that money raised by the gas tax won’t go where it is supposed to go [I’m not a betting man. If I were, I’d take that bet in a moment. I have little doubt that the money will be spent on other “important” projects.]: road and bridge improvements.

State government has a history of raiding the road fund to pay for other state operations [Yes.]. And although Illinois now has a constitutional amendment prohibiting this practice, tax revenues still could be diverted before they actually reach the fund [And no doubt will be, in my opinion. Leftist socialists never have enough money to spend. Never.].

‘The worst part is, there is no guarantee that the money will actually go where it is supposed to go,’ Schaecher said.

Proponents of the tax hike say the state’s roads are in bad shape [Why is that?], and money to fix them has to come from somewhere [How about the general fund. Leftist socialists have never heard of priorities. Every scheme of theirs is a priority to them.].

But the burden of years of state neglect and fiscal mismanagement [What? Illinois has fiscal mismanagement? Oh, yes. Years of not balancing the budget even though required by the Constitution as one example.]  is unfairly being borne by Illinois drivers and the businesses that sell them fuel. State revenue projections don’t factor in long-term revenue losses that will come as commerce shifts to neighboring states [Of course not. The State always over estimates the revenue and underestimates the costs. It is standard operating procedure.].

As Illinois businesses fail to compete, stations will close or reduce their number of employees [Or cut their costs in other areas.]. This means over time there will be less business, income and sales taxes collected [Absolutely.].

Of course, at this point no one knows just how much less.

Contrary to popular perception, most filling stations are small businesses [And operate on small margins of earnings. I did the taxes for a service station in Tucson. His solution was easy. He sold his property to a developer who built a very small shopping mall on the corner property. If I remember correctly, it was the location for about six small businesses.].

‘People may see a sign out front that says Shell or some other brand of gasoline. But the reality is that these are mostly family-owned businesses [Franchises.],’ Sharp said. ‘This gas tax is hurting small businesses across the state [Increase the cost to the consumer and he tries to find ways to save money. One way is to drive less.].’
